Romanticism Era

                                                     Romanticism vs Impressionism

Romanticism was a cultural movement which started at the end of the 1700s and hit it's peak in the early 1800s. Romanticism art focused on showing emotion, moods, all kinds of spirituality, imagination, mystery and fervor(Intense and Passionate feeling).

                                                                 Romanticism

The Wanderer Above the Sea and Fog by-Caspar David Friedrich (in 1818)- found in the Hamburger Kunsthalle Museum - Oil on canvas         https://www.artble.com/artists/caspar_david_friedrich/paintings/wanderer_above_the_sea_of_fog

This painting was painted by Caspar David Friedrich in 1818. I really enjoy this painting because of the mysterious feeling it gives. one element that Friedrich used in this painting is composition and technique. The orientation of this painting is vertical which was unusual in its time. The focus point of this painting is the wanderer. Caspar David Friedrich uses the technique called Ruckenfugen which is a technique that makes the figure something of a mystery to the viewers eyes. The next element Caspar David Friedrich uses is the use of color and light in this art work. The clouds are painted with multiple layers of pain that each have a subtle color change. Caspar David Friedrich uses blues and pinks across the sky and the mountain in the distance echoes these colors. The use of light in this painting looks like its coming up from beneath the rocks and makes the fog illuminating. I feel like this painting really speaks to me, I think this painting symbolizes faith. The man represents a soul and the mountain in the back represents God.

"The Hay Wain" made in 1821 by John Constable, it is found in the Nation Gallery London, it is a oil on canvas  https://www.wentworthgalleries.com.au/news/2015/10/8/a-guide-to-romanticism-realism-and-expressionism-in-art

I personally enjoyed this painting, and I am assuming mostly everyone else does haha because it's known as Constable's most famous painting. One element depicted in this painting is the use of light, the light is coming from the sky and Constable's reflects the light on the water. I think this gives the painting depth and vibrancy. Another element used in this painting is the use of color. Constable only really uses natural tones in this art work. For example the yellow meadows and the greyish water. This helps tie the painting together and adds harmony to the painting. Another element is the detail Constable gives to this painting, For example the brush work on the wheels, the leaves, and the cottage really bring this painting to life. I personally love this painting all the elements just really bring it together and just give such a peaceful vibe.

                                                    Impressionism

"Impression Sunrise" by- Claude Monet in 1872 found in Musee Marmotan Monet and is a Oil Painting https://haleydonnabrown.wordpress.com/2014/10/28/impressionism-in-the-romantic-era/

This painting by Claude Monet caught my eye because it seems very simple, almost unfinished in my opinion. Even though this painting is not one of my personal favorites I still understand it is a great work of art. One art element I found in this painting was the use of color. This painting consists of different intensity of color. Another element would be line work. Monet creates this painting by using small brush strokes. All the small brush strokes are painted horizontally, I think this gives the painting a sense of harmony. Another element is the use of light. You can see in the painting the orange suns reflection on the water. I really like the aspect of the light hitting the water as this painting may not seem finished but its still visible what is going on.

"Paris Street; A Rainy Day" by Gustave Caillevotte in 1877,  Found in the Art institution of Chicago and is a Oil on Canvas https://haleydonnabrown.wordpress.com/2014/10/28/impressionism-in-the-romantic-era/

Compared to the other impressionism painting this painting looks much more complete. This painting is not my favorite because it gives me a gloomy sad feeling. One element in this painting is composition. This painting is three dimensional, there are many different angles and highlights. This allows the painting to look more realistic while still having that impressionism feel to it. Another element in this painting is technique. The technique used to create the wet looking cobble stone really brings the painting to life. The last element I noticed is space. The painting is organized unusually, the light pole is in the center of the painting while all the people are on the outskirts. I think the asymmetric nature of this painting gives it a unique vibe.

The romanticism and impressionist historical periods overlapped, and therefore share many significant attributes.  Romanticism embraces a focus of nature, emotion and mood. Many romanticism paintings are landscapes, or outside. Where as the impressionist  mainly focused on open composition small and thin brush strokes and depiction of light and the passage of time. Romanticism was born in a time period where many people where frustrated with the recent wars and political problems. The focus on embracing nature and emotion was welcomed as a reflection of the modern societal feeling. Impressionism began as a weak movement, it was not welcomed because of it's untraditional and bold depictions. After awhile the impressionist movement eventually gained a lot of popularity and brought a new light into the art community. I personally enjoy romanticism art over impressionism because it resonates more with me. I feel like I get a clearer image of what I'm looking at and it has a clearer meaning but still room for a lil mystery. However I still value Impressionism and still like some of the pieces.

  1. Great examples, especially the painting, The Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, which is absolutely associated and representative of the Romanticism era, with its distinct artistic interpretation showing emotion and depth. This painting leaves a great deal open to interpretation, which allows the viewer to draw their own emotional supposition about the meaning of this painting, as you cannot see the man’s face, giving a mysterious feeling. Love this painting!
